Emirates goes nuclear
The first nuclear power plant to be constructed in the United Arab Emirates has been completed.
Barakah nuclear power plant, unit 1, was officially opened by South Korea's President Moon Jae-in and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in late March.
All four units at Barakah are scheduled for completion by 2020. The four APR1400 nuclear reactors will supply up to 25% of the UAE's electricity needs and save up to 21 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
Environmental power specialists Green Energy Markets has said that renewable energy generated more power than brown coal, gas or oil during Australia's summer.
The 9880GWh from renewables during the summer months (1 December to 28 February) exceeded that from brown coal by 8% and gas by 40% in Australia's main grids.
For the National Electricity Market, renewables delivered an average of 5610mW during the 11am to 7pm peak demand period over summer.
"This was 32% greater than power from brown coal and 78% higher than gas over this critical period of high demand for electricity," said Green Energy Markets.
Thai oiler to work with Petronas
Thailand's PTTEP is looking to bolster its oil and gas assets in Southeast Asia in the light of recovering oil prices.
President of exploration and production Phongsthorn Thavisin said the company was pursing more collaboration with other regional operators such as Petronas.
This includes investing in 10% of Train 9 of Malaysia LNG and exploring offshore block SK410B in Sarawak with the Malaysian company.
Windy proposals sought
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) today announced it is seeking expressions of interest for projects to trial short-term forecasting from large-scale wind and solar farms across Australia.
On behalf of the Australian government, ARENA is committing up to $A10 million funding to improve ‘5-minute ahead' forecasts for wind and solar farms operating in the National Electricity Market.
In partnership with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), ARENA is seeking to demonstrate wind and solar farms can provide more accurate forecasts of their output into AEMO's central dispatch system.
At present, AEMO is responsible for forecasting how much electricity will be generated by wind and solar farms, the output of which varies depending on the weather and time of day.
As a part of this trial, wind and solar farms will be able to submit their own forecasts to AEMO. This will allow local measurements to be combined with AEMO's modelling to improve the overall accuracy.
ARENA is seeking proposals for projects that will deliver ‘5-minute ahead' forecasts, explore the commercial benefits to wind and solar farms of investing in forecasting technology and examine factors that affect the accuracy of forecasts in different weather, operational conditions and geographies.
Expressions of interest are sought in relation to utility scale wind and solar, including from generators, forecasting technology companies and turbine and solar panel manufacturers. Proposals may include multiple generators and forecasting technologies.
Expressions of interest open today and close on May 9 this year and successful applicants will be notified in June 2018 and invited to submit full applications.
